Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is one of the third-generation (3G) mobile telecommunications technologies, which is also being developed into a 4G technology.UMTS also covers the radio access network (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network, or UTRAN) and the core network (Mobile Application Part, or MAP), as well as authentication of users via USIM cards (Subscriber Identity Module). But W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), UMTS-FDD, UTRA-FDD, or IMT-2000 CDMA Direct Spread is an air interface standard found in 3G mobile telecommunications networks. It is the basis of Japan's NTT DoCoMo's FOMA service and the most-commonly used member of the UMTS family and sometimes used as a synonym for UMTS.it uses the same core network as the 2G GSM networks deployed worldwide, allowing dual-mode operation along with GSM/EDGE; a feat it shares with other members of the UMTS family.

Wow! =:O EXCELLENT answer, NaS!! I'm not used to seeing correct answers about cell phone technology! The only thing I can add for the OP is this: Though the two are both a CDMA technology, they are completely incompatible with each other.

sim card is the easiest way to discribe the difference. but it goes beyond that. different carriers use different bandwidths, and thus use different technologies to push/recieve the signals.

UMTS is the high speed front end network to the existing voice and data n/w's.
where as WCDMA is the modulation scheme used within the UMTS radio access network.
