12 people will need to be connected to a network of an old house. The cable installation will be difficult. What type of network devices should I use? Maybe just a wireless router?

A wireless router would work, but you would have to buy and install wireless cards in each of the 12 computers if they aren't already equipped to handle wireless.

If you're not opposed to running network cable to each of the computers, then a router and a switch would be ideal. You wouldn't have to "daisy-chain" them together as mentioned below. Your internet connection connects to the router, the router connects to the switch, and the switch connects to each of the computers.

Wireless is definitely your best bet. You can place the wireless router right next to the cable modem, which you can place wherever the cable connection comes into the house. Then you don't have to worry about running cables all over the house to get everyone connected. Also, you'd have to daisy chain 3-4 routers together if you were going with a wired connection.

If you don't have any equipment yet, I would recommend getting a router that supports the new "N" band technology, which offers much better signal strength, speed, and range. N is backwards-compatible with G and B, so if the computers on your network have older network cards, they will still be able to connect.

Also, I'd highly recommend NOT buying a cable modem with a wireless router built in. Buy two separate devices. Much more reliable.

Good luck and have fun! If you have any problems setting up the network, don't hesitate to ask.

It depends on how big the house is. I would suggest wireless router, but it depends on hwo may computers have wireless devices installed. At my house i have one desktop connect to my cable modem and a wilress router which connect my other 2 laptops. Works pretty good. I have belkin router.

A router and a 12-24 port switch, 1 port for each connection, if you are not using wireless, or just a wireless router.

If possible have some that are wired (fastest response). Wireless might just be the way, although you should conduct a test prior to doing everythig as the number of walls, floors, distance from router, etc will affect signal strength to each unit.

yellow marks in device manager means there is a problem with that device. I would suggest click on them to bring up the device and pressing troubleshoot (or what ever it is called, I am using linux right now) They don't get removed from the list unless you physically remove from the computer or have the bios to reject that device.
