Okay, I'm getting a laptop and it has 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi built in. My sister is getting an iPod touch and it has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi built in. I'm totally wi-fi stupid, so I have a lot of questions.

1. Is there a difference with the "a/b/g" and "b/g" thing?
2. To get wi-fi in your house, you have to buy a router, right?
3. Do you just plug that into your modem (I have cable internet) or does it have to be "installed" or something?
4. I heard they cost around $80, but which ones are the best?
5. Do you have to pay a monthly fee, or does it just run off of the internet you have already?

I probably forgot a lot that I wanted to ask, but whatever. Anything else you know, I'd be glad if you shared it with me! Thanks ;]

1. there is a difference, but not really between the two you mentioned. iPod touch supports up to 802.11g, which is cool. the fastest is 802.11n, but it not many people have devices that connect to n anyway, so its unlikely that you will find a wireless router that only connects using 'n'. don't worry about that if you dont know what it is, trust me.

2. you do need a wireless router.

3. you take the ethernet that comes out of your modem and goes into you computer and disconnect the end that goes into the computer. you stick that in the WAN port in the wireless router. now you have wireless. you can set up your wifi connection on your computer and enable password use as well.

4. I have an Apple Airport Extreme base station, which is $180. however, you dont need that, since your touch only connects up to g. Buy the Apple Aiport Express, for $99. it is great, and you can even play your computer's music wirelessly. It works for both Macs & PC's.

5. There is absolutely not monthly fee. it is a one time iPod touch payment, which is the cost of the ipod. nothing more. so, it is either $299 for the 8gb touch or $399 for the 16gb touch.

I have one. buy it. it is amazing.

it is not a dumb question in any respect. in case you have a prompt router setup on your place, and it sound such as you do, you would be waiting to connect your pc to it. It additionally shouldn't fee anymore. once you get your pc you need to confirm it is prompt in a position...each and all of the recent ones are however so which you particularly do no longer ought to fret approximately that. you will ought to setup the prompt connection once you first get your pc. it is not difficult, yet once you used a password (preserve connection so no it is easy to thieve your cyber web) on your router you will ought to have that to set it up. Tech help would be there to help in case you like it or you additionally can ask on the area you purchase the pc.
