Ok so at home i have a desk top pc and my sister has a laptop. I have this problem and we get our internet with a router and modem. I was surfing the net when all of a sudden, my internet stops working. The modem is connected to my computer directly while simultaneously is connected to my router. When i turn off my router, the internet works fine but my sister gets no intenet. When i turn on the router, the internet stops working. Whats up with this?

If you call your internet provider, then they will be able to walk you through step by step on how to solve your problem. That's what me & my b/f had to do. We went a month with having to share the same computer because the router kept on booting me and my b/f lost the receipt, so we couldn't take it back. There is a site that they will have you go to, so you can adjust the settings for your router and then it will always work. I have ATT. My router provider couldn't help us, but ATT could. I know how frustrated you guys are lol Good luck ;)

You shouldn't have your computer directly connected to the modem. The Modem should be connected to the router in the port labeld "internet", then you should connect each computer (with a wire or wireless) to the router.

Your sister is using wireless that is why when you unplug the router she loses her internet!....your router may be bad...

Also, though if you are running DSL you may be falling out or sync with the DSLAM that can cause on again off again service...often with a sync issue they have to send a tech!

I am an AT&T technician, and unless you get a nice operator like me they will not walk you through how to set up your linksys...They will tell you to call them....So if you want to call them they will walk you through how to fix modem issues, but rarely walk you through a router....

Okay set up should look like this modem phone cord going from modem to wall......ethernet cord going from modem to linksys....then ethernet going from linksys to desktop....the only ethernet that should run from the back of the modem is the one going to the linksys...all other ethernets need to run from the back of the linksys!!!
