PLEASE read this in full before giving an answer, thanks :)

This is on a CLEAN, 100% CLEAN install of XP pro SP3 with a corp VLK. On a HP DC5100 MT

I am unable to reach microsoft.com or any sub domains of microsoft.com with this ONE machine, every other machine, 3 of them, i have tested it on seems to work.

Things i have done and their results:

- Tracert microsoft.com > unable to resolve target system name microsoft.com
- Tracert 207.46.197.32 (the IP for microsoft.com) > it comes back clean up until M$ stops taking ICMP packets
- Manually set an IP and DNS server
- Flushed the DNS cache
- Gone to http://207.46.197.32 (M$'s IP)
- Turned on EVERY service on the computer.
- Logged on with another admin account i created
- Tried reaching the site with firefox
- Went through a proxy server > it worked.... but can't get auto updates like that....
- Changed network port and switch

Also, now while writing this, i DID do one thing to the machine, and that was install .net 3.5....

I am going reformat this and try again.
But it is bugging me as to what that install would have done.
So any thoughts of what could have happen?

If update.microsoft.com does not resolve to 65.55.185.29 then you have a DNS problem of some sort.

Since you haven't give the output of an nslookup on update.microsoft.com I can't tell you if that is the case or not.

I actually suggest that you email theemperor@techemperor.com and let me talk you through some troubleshooting. Good chance I can get it fixed for you with a little more data.

first of all congratulations to you in achieving point 5 cuz i'm nonetheless in point 4.. What i think of is once you attain point 5 do not attempt to respond to at a streach for that 5000 factors yet be slow and stable.. attempt to respond to in categories as i think of in straightforward terms giving indepth solutions won't fetch you to the splendid..you have to be straightforward and concise your solutions..yet whilst asked for info or information then take the possibility and answer to the fullest... by ability of giving style of solutions you will get greater factors and would upload spice on your solutions..So do not continually concentration on in-intensity solutions..! desire this helps!! each and every of the suitable!

Your computer may be infected with the Internet Explorer Virus.

Use another computer, go to microsoft / download to a memory stick, the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer, ( the installer comes with a Malicous software Removal Tool.

Put the Memory stick in the problem computer, install the IE,

It may help your situation.

I had a similar problem with one of my Win XP boxes. I had to reinstall the TCP/IP protocols (done through network settings) to get it working. The problem was the computer wasn't using the standard TCP/IP protocol at all.
