Question:
Connecting Two Routers Wirelessly?
2010-03-20 09:18:43 UTC
I have two routers (WRT54GS & WRT160N) The 160N is connected directly to the modem and giving off a working wireless access point. The only reason I bought that router was so that I could move the 54GS to another room and remove the 25ft ethernet cable extending from one room to another. I want the 54GS to use the 160N's access point as its own so that I can connect my Xbox360 to the 54GS by ethernet. So basically, I want to connect two routers to the same access point via wireless. I've been having trouble with this for over a week. Help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't do that.

Routers are Access Points, not "Clients" like laptops. Think of it as "master" and "slave" relationships, only one can be a master in a wireless setup (in general...), and it serves to many slaves (laptops).

Some routers, including the 54G can be flashed with third party firmware, DD-WRT. That will make the 54G a box that has 'client" mode. However, you have to check which version of 54G you have, some are easy to do, some you cannot convert.... (yours appears to be supported - it can be converted)

The above answer is ideal ninety% of the time. although, you probably did not perceive the 2d router, so we received't tell if has a "prompt Bridge" mode equipped into it. If it does, you could turn the router right into a prompt bridge by technique of choosing the alternative. The practise will be interior the guide If there's no selection there, then you genuinely favor to purchase new hardware sturdy luck

You need to configure your WRT54GS as an extender (bridge). This option doesn't come on the firmware of that model.

There are some 3rd party vendors that can provide the firmware, I've done that with the WRT54Gv2.

Of course that will void the warranty of your router.

I'll better buy a WET54G that can be your range extender easy.

It is not possible. I have tried to do this before and I failed. Routers can bridge like the modem can so they can share wireless connections.
