Why is my internet so slow? 384 kbps downstream and upstream. Can it be faster with this router?

I use DSL with AT&T with the modem 5100 Speedstream software version 1.0.0.39. I am paying about 25 bucks per month for internet. That modem is connected to a Linksys EtherFast® BEFSR41 Router, which is connected to 3 other computers and 1 xbox.

Why is my internet so slow at 384 kbps? Is it the modem's fault?

I am thinking of buying the Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router, would that make my internet faster? if so, at what speed? I'm not very good at computers. Can this router substitute as the modem?

if not, how can I make my internet go faster?

or is it AT&T's internet problem?

Thank you.

For $25 from AT&T you are paying for DSL Express 1.5Mbps. This is the line from AT&T to the modem. 1.5Mbps is not fast enough to provide internet service for 4 units accessing the internet at the same time especially if the xbox will want the whole line. If you want to correct this you should call AT&T and upgrade to either DSL Pro or DSL Elite service which is $30 and $35 respectively. They will send your modem a new configuration the next day usually.

The WRT54G2 is better than a BEFSR41 but it can not change you connection speed to the internet. A router can not substitute for a modem either.

Call AT&T and sign up for faster service at a larger price per month for better connectivity. Your existing connection is designed for 1 computer, 2 max. It is like trying to fit the Great Lakes through a garden hose at the same time. It does not work.

CT Quantum CCSvc. Connecticut division has AT&T Elite DSL and that was only after we experienced the same problems as you with our Pro service.

It all depends on what connection speed you are paying for from AT&T. The maximum upload speed for both the $25.00 and $19.95 packages is 384 kbps, so if you referring to your upload speed in the description of your problem then buying a new router will not help. If the 384 kbps is your download speed then you may have a problem with AT&T and would need to contact their service people so they can check your connection. If indeed everything is fine on their end and the 384 kbps is your upload speed then upgrading your internet package is the only way to increase your speed.

If you have the basic DSL from ATT you will get Up to 768 Kbps Downstream and Up to 384 Kbps Upstream. If you are only getting 384 down either your other devices on your network are using the bandwidth or you aren't getting a good signal to your modem.

If you want to go faster you will need to call AT&T and bump your plan up. I have the Pro plan and get up to 3mb down. The elite plan lets you get up to 6mb down.

Routers do not slow down your internet. What speed do you pay for? Check your speed at:

www.speedtest.net

and remember that ISP speed is usually in bits/sec, whereas downloads are bytes/sec. Divide the bits/sec you get from speedtest.net by 8 to get your expected download rate.

Other than that, you have to buy faster service if you want any faster....
