with a web server, web gui, apache php, SQL, CIFS (samba), ftp, VPN and torrent client
should be linux based any one got any ideas

I ran amahi on a server and it ran amazingly!! The only reason I don't use it anymore is because we never used it, BUT I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for a linux home server.

I have personally used both Cent OS and Redhat for my server hosting. Redhat is free if you get the normal, older versions such as 8 or 9 however the enterprise editions RHEL, costs money.

I have real good luck with Fedora. running a Cherokee web server. I tried Ubuntu, but got sick and tired of getting wrong password errors.

I don't know, but check out distrowatch, That's also fairly specific, so you might be happiest with something like gentoo where you build from the ground up.

depends on how much experience you have with linux. Either ArchLinux or fedora should be ok.
