i have a dell laptop...my friend has a cafe, it has wifi zone..it's router is a linksys wireless-B...other laptops can access it...but why mine cant? does this have to do with the IEEE 802.11 standards? the router is obviously IEEE 802.11B..and i think the wireless adapter of my laptop is 802.11g? does a device with different 802.11 standards not compatible?

I assume that you can use this computer in other wifi zones? If not probably it has died. That means a trip to the repair shop.

I also assume that your friend's cafe router is set to handle B and G. That is something he/she has to deal with. If it can only handle B then you must make sure your computer G adapter can also work with a B router, as follows:

Next, click Start, My Network Places, then click on View Connections. Double click on the wifi connection then Properties. Then you will get a confusing box of stuff but at the top is the Wifi adapter and the button "configure".Then another box comes up, click Advanced. Go in there. The top property will be somethinng like "Ad-Hoc Wifi". THERE you will see if your adapter is set for B and G or just one only. Make sure it is B/G Mix.

Two things you need to check in your computer.

1) Is the wifi card configured to ONLY accept G connections? This is possible, but not common on any G card that is backward compatible. You would have to look in the properties settings for the wireless adapter in your laptop to make sure it is configured to accept all connections, including B.

2) What is the security level being used by the router you are trying to connect to? If you have a G card, it is likely that it would use any security protocol that the B router would have, but there are rare exceptions.

When you try to log on, you should be doing a scan of available networks, and selecting the one listed for your friends cafe. The list of available networks will tell you if the cafe is using WEP or another protocol. Highlight the networks name and click on the connect button. You will then be asked for the Security Key of the network. If you fail to enter this, you may connect to the network, but will not have any internet access. When you enter the key, you should then see that it is acquiring a network address. Once the network address is locked in, you should have internet access.

One last thought - though this is not as common. If you are using fixed addresses for your home IP, you will have to switch the settings to automatically aquirre the network address in order to be able to use the cafe internet. Some few IP's use specific settings for the IP address. You have to go into the properties on the wifi adapter, and look under the settings for the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Change the settings to automatically acquire both the IP address and the DNS server address. Save your settings and then back out of those screens. You may need to reboot before logging onto the net. BE CERTAIN you write down the old settings if this was the problem. You will need these to log back onto your home network later.

Most g adapters are backward compatible so i doubt it is your laptop, open the router admin page go to wireless then basic wireless settings>and set the wireless network mode to mixed. If your friend has a cafe with a router that is just wireless b,well look for a next friend. lol

A 802.11g card will connect to a 802.11b router however make sure that you are close enough to the actual access point. The only type of equipment that is not compatible is 802.11a with 802.11b/g/n.

Well it depends, does your computer show there is a connection when your at the wifi zone? if not then i would check the settings on your wifi card. and if that doesn't work try the settings on the router or set it to default. if all else does not work out then get a new wifi card.

My advise you to reset wireless router by pressing reset button at the back of router for 30s-1m while it's powered on, after that reconfigure router by using default user name/password.

Linksys

default user name:(leave it blank)

password:admin
