Question:
What is the point to renew DHCP Lease?
2009-10-08 20:58:56 UTC
I read that if you renew the DHCP Lease, it may change your IP address. I also read that a dynamic IP address will change, but a static IP address will not change.
So if you renew a Dynamic IP address, will it always change to a new IP? Why or why not?
What is the point in renewing the DHCP in a static ip address when a static ip address does not change ip address?

This is getting me confused, can anyone please help.

renewing ip add is commonly done if you have dynamic ip address and you want to change your ip for some reason. or you are renewing ip add when you have problem with your network, having difficulty connecting to your server etc. sometimes they use the renew ip command for troubleshooting to make sure that a particular workstation is getting IP from DHCP server. for a network that has DHP server sometimes they configure their network for a workstation to have specific leased time that they will be connectoed to the network and if it goes beyond that time you need to renew your ip otherwise you can't connect to your network anymore...if you have static ip add that ip add can not be changed unless you will do it manually so for static ip renewing has no use...good luck...jexter@eastern.com.ph

your computer has an address in a network (an IP). It can either always be the same address (Static IP) or the address can always change (dynamic IP) in order to get a dynamic IP, your network must have a DHCP server, which gives you a leased address.

What's the issue? none, but if you constantly change your address, then someone looking for you (a service or application in your network) at a certain address; might now find you there anymore cuz you've moved.

Sometimes renewing your DHCP lease fixes connectivity issues.

DHCP only applies to dynamic IP addresses (hence the reason it's called DYNAMIC Host Configuration Protocol)

i don't know much about this but i was told that isp's usually give external static ips to businesses and residentials are usually dynamic and randomly changing.
