Question:
Problems with an internet connection....?

My brother's laptop is having problems connecting to the Internet. He can use applications like Hamachi or Xfire to connect no problem, but when he uses a web browser (he's tested Firefox and Internet Explorer), it will allow him to connect for a short period of time and then it refuses to load anymore web pages. He can load Facebook and use it indefinitely, but the page doesn't refresh, however. The problem doesn't manifest itself when he connects to the internet at a friend's house.

He has a Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. He's also running Zone Alarm for a firewall. On the command prompt, he can't ping Google. Beyond that, the laptop is brand new, so he hasn't had time to muck it up any.

Anyone have any thoughts what the problem may be, and even more, how to fix it? Thanks in advance!

Cheers!

If unplugging the router from power for about 30 seconds and then reconnecting doesn't work.... it's sounds like you have a router issue. Your brother goes to a friends house and everything is fine. That eliminates his laptop. When he comes home, he has issues. You may try Internet Options from Control Panel, click on the Connections tab at the top, and then click Setup. Try setting up an Internet connection using your router so that windows can configure the connection specifically to your router... especially in the event your router has a qwerk that Windows needs to accomodate. Some routers also have a "lease time" option meaning, that a client can only stay connected for X amount of time before their IP addresses is exhausted and a new one required. This should be something done automatically without your knowing it... but perhaps there's an issue with Windows Internet Connection and that process... which is why I suggested Internet Options, Connections, and Setup and Internet connection.

Good luck.

If the router reset doesn't work. I would suggest shutting down zonealarm and seeing if the problem is still there. I was a fan of Zonealarm but it was giving me issues with making a server for Garry's Mod. Sure enough, even when I said to ALLOW all Steam and Garry's Mod connections, the log shows 20 plus connections being blocked. I dumped it and went to Comodo. I had Comodo before and only went to Zonealarm because I have a free key for one year of Zonealarm Pro or premium or whatever its called.

Ok, this thing happens on most people. Try to follow the instructions below:

* Press Start

* Type cmd

* Type ipconfig /release

* Type ipconfig /renew

* Type exit

I think that would work. Hope this will help. =]

Make your modem switch off then push a small reset button, then plug it and on wait for a minute then use.
