Question:
screen video on linux?
2014-03-29 02:53:04 UTC
I was surprised to find I couldn't load a single video on any of my computers. After reading the Screen video FAQ I discovered that Linux (even a current Ubuntu installation) isn't supported at all! Granted, it's a fairly small percentage of the systems out there, numbering only in the millions, but come one, there are certain other video services that work perfectly every time. I'd love to jump off a certain competitor, but for now it appears I'm unable to. These days it's very rare to find something that doesn't work properly on Linux. The question: is there a plan for Linux support on Yahoo Screen in the near future? Thanks!

I have been using Linux for the passed 12yrs and never had any problems with waching any video in full screen. You have mentioned Ubuntu which is far from the best Linux distribution But if you download the proprietary restricted video drivers from Ubuntu website you might just have a bit of luck watching videos on your computer....

I can even watch videos booting my 14yr old Dell laptop from live dvd disks or usb jump/flash drives. If you want to know anything about Linux then use the Linux users forums Not FAQ...

I run Linux Mint Debian Edition. Mint will install pretty much all of the "non-free" libraries and other tools necessary to watch or listen to any media. Yahoo Screen requires Flash. In Mint, a flash plugin is installed, so the site works perfectly for me.

This may sound like a dumb question, but have you installed a Flash plugin of any type? If other video works, it would indicate that you have one. But Screen should work as well.

I use Slackware, not Ubuntu, and Yahoo Screen videos work very well. Fast and high quality. If you can't get it to work, I suspect the problem is in either Ubuntu or in the video drivers you are using.

Try installing Slackware - I've used it for years and never had any problems. Ubuntu? Not so trouble free. The maintainers like to use bleeding edge libs and that can cause problems. Slackware is a lot more cautious about pushing out the latest and greatest, and because of that it is one of the most stable distributions out there.

We used Redhat Linux and Centos at work, and on my personal servers. I have not experienced any difficulty watching videos at all.

I watch movies, and even South Park on my Linux machines.

Maybe Ubuntu is your problem. It is very nonstandard.
