Channel 6 is the default.
They recommend changing to 1 or 11 if you are getting any interference on the default channel 6.
Give your router a unique SSID - pick any name/number combination you like - greater than 6 or 8 characters is best and mix uppercase/lowercase/number combinations for best security. e.g.: "My1stPersonalNet226"
Set your encryption to WPA or WPA2 (don't use WEP, it's no longer considered secure)
Also pick a unique unguessable PassPhrase (PW) with mixed characters similar technique as SSID but better.
If you set your other wireless devices Channel, SSID and PassPhrase to match your router setting, there should be no problem being unique from neighbours.
Once your wireless devices can connect to your router, "turn OFF the broadcast" feature on the router. You don't need to broadcast your existance to the world (which it does by default).
Now, no one in your area knows your wireless net exists and are not likely to attempt to connect to you by doing a Site Survey scan. Your strong PW and WPA/WPA2 with AES encryption will also prevent any hacker connections, too.
