2. Disabled wifi on computer
3. Unplugged Power adapter from Wifi Router
4. Pluged Ethernet Cable into Wifi Router
5. Pluged Ethernet Cable into computer
6. Pluged in Wifi router (wifi router powered up)

Okay, first you need to plug the router directly into your PC with the ethernet cable.. forget about the cable modem for now since it sounds like you have only one ethernet cable. This MUST be done with the ethernet cable for the first setup since wifi isn't configured yet.

Unplug the power from the router and connect the ethernet cable to your computer and then restart. Once windows starts up, plug in the power to the router.

Then go to internet explorer, in the address bar type in 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. This should take you to the setup page. It will ask you for a username and password, the default for linksys routers is usually admin with a blank password or admin and 1234.

From there you can turn on your wifi and set it up, once it's set up you can plug the cable modem back into it and be able to surf the web.

Hope this helps.

Get rid of the static IP address, set it back to "Obtain IP address automatically" and reboot the computer. Plug the ethernet cable into one of the four LAN ports on the router, and the other end into the ethernet port on the computer, (You can't do the setup wirelessly), turn on the router.Leave every thing alone for about 30 seconds.

Go to the computer, click on start, then run, in the run box, type "command" (no quotes). A black window should open up, type "ipconfig" you will get some information, but what you are looking for is the IP address, it should start with 192.168, and will either be 192.168.0.XXX or 192.168.1.XXX (XXX being any number between 2 and 254) remember this or write it down.

Type "exit" and the command window will close.

Open your browser, and ignore any error messages, if your IP address was 192.168.0.XXX, type 192.168.0.1 in the address box in your browser, if it was 192.168.1.XXX, type 192.168.1.1 and hit Enter, that should take you to the setup screen for your router.

"I read online I needed to input a static ip address so I inputted: 255.255.254 " This really couldnt be more wrong. 99% of cable accounts DO NOT use a static IP, you will want to set your router to obtain it's IP address automatically. Below is a basic walk through.

To access your router, you will need to input your DEFAULT GATEWAY.

Select Start then Run.

Type CMD

Press OK

In the Dos Command Prompt:

Type IPCONFIG

Write down your DEFAULT GATEWAY (It will probably be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)

Open a web browser like internet explorer.

In the address bar type the default gateway

Check the corresponding information to OBTAIN IP ADDRESS INFORMATION AUTOMATICALLY

you need to put into your web browser address bar 192.168.1.1 and that should connect you to your setup page

I also found this page about resetting your router....might help fix your problems

cmd> ipconfig /all for the wireless adapter find your default gateway, and put that number into your web browser and there you can configure your settings
