It's only slightly better than regular dial up and nowhere near even the slowest speed of cable/DSL. Basically, the 'turbo' internet stores information on your computer for frequently visited websites. When you keep going back to these sites, it seems to pull them up faster than a normal dial up connection.

For the most part a lot of sites don't do frequent major changes. For example, the background usually stays the same. So why load a new background every time you visit. The turbo internet just stores this info on your hard drive and only updates it every so often. I've seen some that will automatically dial up the internet and update themselves in the middle of the night when the computer is not being used. By keeping a log of frequently visited sites, it knows just where to go for it's updates.

In general turbo dial up is a process where text and some graphic files are compressed to make them load faster. Things such as streaming audio, video and games will be no faster than regular dial up. As far as speeds go, turbo dial up is nowhere near as good as dsl or cable.

Here is a statement from TalkAmerica.net: Talk America's Turbo ISP product uses server-side compression and cache technology to reduce the size of pages before they reach your computer and decrease the time it takes to view websites.

The software accelerates HTML, Javascript, JPEG, GIFS, BMPS, text, and e-mail. It does not accelerate streaming media, secure websites, file attachments, digital music, or digital photos.

Turbo 5X makes it seem like you're surfing at up to 5x the speed of a typical 56k connection. This is the same type of software that other large competitors such as NetZero and Earthlink use.

It is basically the same as regular dial up. Spend the extra cash and get dsl/cable you will never go back.
