Question:
DNS problems in Vista?
2009-04-20 16:15:46 UTC
I have a network at home running through a BT home hub.

The file server (Win XP SP3) is wired to the router and my PC (Vista SP2) is wirelessly connected.

I have shortcuts to my file server via it's English name (JONS_SERVER) and these worked fine up until recently. Now, it claims this computer cannot be found but manually typing the IP address in Explorer works just fine. Then the shortcuts work OK for a short while before "disappearing" again.

This obviously seems like a DNS issue but I have no idea what is causing the problem.
Can anybody help?

Unless you are hosting your own DNS server this probably is not a DNS issue. If you are hosting your own DNS server then do a nslookup and type the name in question. You will see what the DNS is returning. You need to look at how you are doing your name resolution. If this is handled by your "hosts" file(C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc)(providing that c:\windows is where your xp os is installed it could be c:\winnt or anything for that matter but those are the most common and c: is the most common drive to have the os installed on) then open that up and check that the names to ips are still correct.

attempt restarting your router. A DNS server is a working laptop or workstation that interprets internet addresses into internet IP addresses so your workstation is conscious the place to circulate once you opt to circulate to a particular internet website. via default you will use a DNS server belonging on your ISP. Restarting the router will refresh the handle of this DNS server. If that doesn't paintings you could desire to alter your settings to apply a public area DNS server - yet we are getting slightly technical now.

Did you try flushing the DNS cache? You can do it from the command prompt screen by typing:

ipconfig /flushdns
