If you want to connect two computers directly with one cable, you need what is called a 'crossover cable', not just a regular ethernet cable.
Otherwise you'll need 2 regular ethernet cables and a router (or hub).

i haven't tried peer-to-peer communications with new pc's today. you might try as well. use an ethernet cable and just connect the two pc. if not possible then use your lan. make your desktop the server. try to map your network and locate your laptop or the other way around.

Rather than J K's answer, it is easier to buy a cheap switch and use straight through patch cables. You will then have to enable file sharing and share the drives that you want to share. It would help if we knew what OS you are using.
