There are certain words that have predefined meanings called Reserved Words. This of course is why you can't make folders with that name.

Some of the more common are:

CON - The display monitor

PRN - Default value is LPT1

LPT1-LPT3

AUX - Serial port 1 (COM1)

COM1-COM4

NUL

Also, don't use these words for User Logons either.

You cannot create a folder with the same name as any of the following devices:

CON, PRN, LPT1, LPT2 ..LPT9, COM1, COM2 ..COM9

This limitation ensures that redirection to these devices will always work.

What would 'reproduction con newfile.txt' then mean? BSOD? Giving this list of alternative DOS units that ought to't be used as folder names: CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9. wish you get it.

con is reserved by Windows for a process which sends information to the console (usually called monitor). A folder with the name "con" which accidently create a command telling the computer to send everything in the folder to the consolde, and could crash the PC. So Windows restricts you from being able to create such a folder.

Because DOS (and windows) uses "con" as a device name, it's short for "console".

If you type in from a command line:

copy con test.txt

You can then type freely. When you hit ctrl-z the file will close, and you'll have a file called "test.txt" consisting of what you typed.... you copied it from the console to your file.

Because con in Spanish means "with" and that is possibly racist.
