Question:
Will I obtain AC wifi speeds if my AC router is connected to an N modem?

Getting really bad ping/ms gaming on wifi(about 600-900). Direct Cable is fine (60-90).
My modem/router combo supports 802.11N. My Laptop supports 802.11AC.

I'm thinking of just buying an 802.11AC router and my problems will be solved.
Is it that easy?
Specifically this router:

Thank you in advance!

There is no such thing as an N modem. A modem is purely a signal converter between the analogue signals on the feed from the ISP and the digital signals used on your internal equipment. N refers to a particular mode of WiFi, but a genuine modem does not provide WiFi. WiFi is provided only by a wireless router.

The modem will match the speed provided on the connection from your ISP, and that is all.

If you have an AC router, then you need AC compatible wireless interfaces in your devices (computers, tablets, phones, etc). Such a router will probably have Gigabit Ethernet ports as well.

For most people, their ISP connection is rarely over 100 Mbps, and few people can justify speeds higher than that.

Your AC router will provide AC speeds on 5 GHz if all the devices that are currently connected to it by WiFi are all working in AC mode. If any device is running slower, then 5 GHz will drop to the slower speed.

Even though your ISP connection is probably much slower than AC speed, you can still make use of the speed to transfer files, etc, between different devices attached to the router either by WiFi or Ethernet. AC is only available on 5 GHz. This could allow a Gigabit Ethernet connected file server to provide files to computers over WiFi. The fastest speeds on 2.4 GHz are in N mode with MIMO extensions. Again, if devices do not support the full speeds then 2.4 GHz will switch to the speed of the slowest connected device.

I hope this helps.

modem/router combos = nope.avi

they are HORRIBLE. not only is the wifi horrible, the router has absolutely no settings at all and the modem is also generally garbage.

replace everything.

buy a new modem (look for something like motorola SB6121 or SB6141), then buy a separate router.

You dont need wireless AC unless you are paying for a 1Gbps connection from your ISP. wireless N can support up to 600Mbps connections. i have the best connection available in my area and its only 300Mbps, so its not likely you have above 600+Mbps from your isp. if you do then get an ac router.

of any consumer router, asus routers imo are the best. i have a ASUS RT-N66U and it works great. (routers with external antenna generally will give you better wireless performance)

But know ping is based generally on distance and packet loss (packet loss is caused from poor wireless signal or wireless interference). what ever you get using a direct connection is about the best you can expect. so even with good wifi with no packet loss, it wont ever out perform wired.

Its possible (especially with others using your network), that your modem doesnt have enough download/upload ports, and is causing traffic leaving your house to be congested (meaning a new modem can help lower your ping). so it is possible a better modem and router can lower your ping below your current wired right now. (it should definitly help with extremely high wifi ping)

So assuming youre modem and router are not impacting your ping in any way, then there is not much more you can do. higher ping is caused by the distance form you, to your ISP to the server.

data has to go from your house to your isp's servers. from there it travels to the game server. then back. that is what ping is, the time it takes to get there.

But sometimes your isp will not take the best route to get from them to the game servers. in america especially where the internet infrastructure is ****, this is a common occurrence. if you have crappy isp like comcast, time warner, or verizon, you may want to look into a gaming VPN like WTfast or pingzapper to lower your ping (in a normal sense, a vpn will always increase your ping and lower your speeds, since you are making an extra stop on the journey to the server. but in cases where isp's are being **** with routing your data, it can lower ping and increase speeds).

No you will not. in Networking you will only be as fast as your slowest connection.

From Laptop to AC router will show 5Ghz speeds because that's your connection... but will drop down to 2.4Ghz speeds once it reaches N Combo Modem

That is likely to make it slower. Your own wireless card is the problem.
