I would recommend the USB solution for certain situations, such as a poor signal where the laptop is going to be used. I have had clients complain they can not get a decent signal at the table or desk where they often use the computer. In these cases by using a USB adapter, we can locate it elsewhere in the room where it will get a good signal. This works better than external antennas in many cases as the signal loss of cables at wifi frequencies is so extreme. But of course carrying around the usb adapter for use in a cyber cafe or airport would be tedious. So examine the situations where YOU use wireless and make the choice that works best for YOU. In some cases it is worth it to have both.

I have purchased many different versions of both PCMCIA and USB cards. As the above answer states, speed is not an issue here. In my experience, the card-bus has better reliability and typically a stronger signal. You also have the option on some card based adapters to add on an external antenna to add some extra power to your signal if you need it. Orinoco makes some good cards.

No difference in performance, but the USB device can also be used on any computer while the PCMCIA device is only good on laptops. The speed factor will be limited on the wireless spec per both USB and PCMCIA are both fast enough to handle what the wireless side can handle
