The ethernet port on my laptop is not working, so the only way I can currently access the internet is via USB port. The wireless router I just purchased only has ethernet ports on it.

I talked to a guy at the computer store who was telling me that there is a way to set it up without having to connect the router to the computer. Said all I needed to do was connect the router to the DSL modem with the ethernet cable it came with and then somewhere type in the generic IP address for the Belkin router.

Also, the router I have is an Ativa brand, but when I called the customer support number that came in the box, it took me to a Belkin answering service, so I assume Ativa and Belkin are one in the same. Please let me know also if I am incorrect in that assumption.

Can anyone PLEASE help me with this?! Any suggestions are certainly appreciated.

Your laptop needs to have wireless capabilities, or a WiFi card. Then you need to set the wireless router to DCHP if it doesn't already come that way. You should be fine then.

You need a USB adapter to connect to one of the the computer USB ports. It talks to the router, which is connected to the modem. I assume you got this at Office Depot? That's a brand they sell.

As to Belkin, I have no idea whether they own Ativa or what that situation is, but take help where you can get it. If it were me, I'd take it back to Office Depot, pay a little more and get a actual Belkin or Linksys router and USB adapter. Then call them for help in getting this set up with WPA security so your wireless signal can't be hijacked.

Yep. You don't need the USB cable at all.

Just plug the Ethernet cable from your modem to the router, and have your computer connect to the router wirelessly. It should be able to automatically detect the router. Browse to the router's default IP and configure it. Or run the CD that came with it.

Not sure if Ativa is Belkin.

you will possibly be able to desire to have a community cable going from the modem to the WAN or internet port of the router. This port is often set a sprint different than for the different ports on the router. you will possibly be able to then might desire to restart the modem then the router, with the aid of unplugging it for some seconds and then plugging it back in. Wait until the lights on the modem quiet down until now restarting the router. Reset your computer's IP address. appropriate-click on the community adapter's icon on the job bar, close to the clock, and choose "prestige". "fix" the relationship. you will possibly desire to get an IP address of 192.168.?.? the place the 1st ? is 0, a million, or 2. The router's address would be 192.168.?.a million. The setup disk might desire to then have the flexibility to discover the router. It only grants a guided approach to establish issues; you additionally can log directly to the router at as quickly as, employing a internet browser, and alter the settings. To make the on the spot shelter, replace the default SSID (community call). The default call tells anybody staring at your community what variety of router you have. chosen a recognition you like, besides the shown fact that it is going to not be something which will discover you (do not use your final call, or maybe a puppy's call, working example). choose the main effective encryption that the on the spot card on your computer helps - WPA or WPA2. elect a reliable shared key (it incredibly is the password to connect). To be even safer, turn off the SSID broadcast (the community call heavily isn't exhibited to anybody searching for a community) and/or activate MAC filtering (enable basically commonplace gadgets on your community). undergo in techniques that a on the spot community is often much less shelter than a under pressure one, because of the fact the community site visitors is going over radio waves you may not administration fairly of wires you may administration. besides the shown fact that, it would not sound like a under pressure community is a reasonable answer on your case.

connect your wireless router to DSL modem using a Cat5/6 cable then connect your laptop via wireless to the wireless router.

setup your wireless router so that it would have a range of ip address to give away, make it DHCP, then on your laptop make your laptop automatically get an IP address from a DHCP server ( which is your wireless router). then on the dsl modem set the public IP (which would be be given by your ISP) and the private IP ( an IP address that is within the range of IP address that you have set on your wireless router).

that's it, when your dsl modem connects to its ISP, it will have internet connection, then your dsl modem will give inet connection to your wireless router then your wireless router will provide connection to your laptop.

cheers!

Connect to your wireless router using your generic ip adress. Than disable its DHCP settings. (So that it will use your modems settings instead) Than connect your Wireless router to your modem and connect to your wireless access point with your laptop. Voila.
