You can't connect it directly as it is the job of the router to assign an ip address that devices will recognize and printers dont do that. What I did was to connect the usb printer to my computer and enable sharing for the printer. On the laptop, simply install the printer. Go to Start/Printer and Faxes/File/Add Printer. This will open the add printer wizard. Select adding a network printer and browse for your printer.

Remember to allow access to your PC in any firewall program (including XP) that you are using or it will block your notebooks attempts to connect. This method will require that your desktop is on to print but will let you connect without having to buy a print server.

There are USB to Ethernet adaptors for your computer: these will not work.

You need a network print server (network printer adapter; print server); either wired or wireless.

For wired:

IOGEAR GPSU21 Print Server - $53.00

Wireless:

Connect a printer or All-in-One to a home network

The best way to network a printer is to connect it directly to your home network by using a network adapter (sometimes called a network interface card, or NIC). This adapter can be either wired -- that is, requiring a cable to hook it until the network -- or wireless. If your printer already has a network adapter installed, it is considered network-ready. If your printer is ready for a wired network, you'll see an RJ-45 jack, (looks like a wide telephone jack), on the back.

Non-network-capable printer: You can still network a printer without a Jetdirect expansion slot using an external Jetdirect box. (Both wired and wireless models are available). The printer's USB or parallel interface connects to this box, which connects to the network. Most external Jetdirect boxes can support multiple printers, including non-HP printers.

If the settings on your on the spot adapter have been diverse out of your router, it does no longer connect in any respect so your settings are ok. The consistent connecting and disconnecting could be by exterior interference or attenuation by how a ways you're out of your get admission to element (router). often you're constrained to approximately one hundred fifty ft. in desirable circumstances without blockage which incorporate steel partitions, cement structures, etc. certainty will cut back you to probable a million/2 that distance. additionally interference interior the alerts could be brought about by units that use the comparable frequencies which incorporate 2.4ghz cordless telephones, microwaves, or the different device that operates interior the two.4ghz variety and this does not could be interior your individual abode. it may additionally be a pals kit inflicting themes for you. in case you think of sign interference could be the reason, attempt changing the channel settings on your router and adapter to verify which one grants the main efficient sign capability. A router will evaluate each and every of the climate and adjusts its velocity to what it believes is terrific for its concern. If the climate are too undesirable it quite is going to ultimately merely provide up transmitting and receiving that's why you have become the consistent connection and disconnection.

No you cannot, although there are printers that have bluetooth and wifi built in. If your is not one of those I would recommend a USB Print Server.
