The routers ports are the gateways to the other network ...for a windows gateway the router port to which the network containing the windows PC is connected is called the default gateway.

The 2 switches that your are talking about ...well ..one of them could be a load balancer rather than a switch .....but if your are 100% sure that both were switches ...they must have been connected serially and with a crossover cable. ..it is not at all important for 2 switches to be used always to connect a router to a pc .....in fact your directly connect a router to a pc if you have just one pc. ...however if you need to connect more PCs ...then u need a switch.

Okey the fiurst thing is there are 7 OSI layers. Switches work on 2nd layer which is data link layer. Data Link Layer has MAC addresses and Networkn layer has IP Addresses, Within Same Network, you do not need IP Addresses so in one network, you can have one switch. If there are two networks, you need a layer 3 device which can read the network layer header. i.e. the ip address. So yo interconnect two networks, you need a router since both networks are different. One Switch on one networj which is on one side of the router and the other switch for second network which is on the second side of the router. Two switches are needed so that communication is possible within each network. Thats why you need two switches so that theres communication between each network because router has limited number of ports. One side of router connects to one switch and the other side connects to other network. A gateway is something that you need to connect to outer world for example world wide web or internet. You need a gateway to access all the ip addresses not included in your personal network. A pc can act as a router as well. If you put two lan cards in the pc and connect each lan card to different different networks. Windows server has routing services which route the inter network traffic but a physical router is dedicated device. Offers more security, features and performance. hope your question is answered.

In your current configuration your gateway is considered a bridge with no rules or firewalls. A router is a gateway on steroids. You can block certain ports as well as certain sites from the users. that is the easiest explanation.
