Question:
How can i make my download/connection speed faster?

I'd really like to make my connection speed faster.

On my wireless connection network status box it say's the signal is excellent and the speed is 54.0Mbps, is this fast enough to download movies in a couple of hours and not the 2days its telling me in bittorrent?

I'm using a belking router and there are 3 other pc's using this router.

Can anyone tell me how i can make my connection faster and what 54.0Mbps is in Kbps?

Thanks in advance!

To be frank with you, there is no way you can surf greater than the 54Mbps. Actually you must be browsing below 54Mbps, as this is quite relative. And this is NOT your internet speed, that's your browsing speed in the wireless connection.

If you plan to use torrents for download, i would suggest you open the ports in your belkin router & also configure your torrent client(utorrent or bittorent).

One thing at a time: -

Firstly, as stated above, if I had a download rate of 54Mbps I would be jumping for joy, as this is well in excess of almost all internet providers currently available in the UK (there is a company operating in Portsmouth and I think Dunfermline that run fibre optic lines direct to users' homes for 100Mbps). Most ADSL (normal broadband) companies can offer 24Mbps at best. That's if your local exchange has been upgraded to a BT 21CN exchange and you live next door to the exchange. Otherwise, you can expect max speeds between 2 and 6 Mbps. The 54 Mbps in your case is almost certainly the link between PC and router (802.11g standard).

54Mbps is equivalent to 54000 Kbps (Mega bits per second and Kilo bits per second meaning Millions and thousands respectively).

To make your connection speed quicker, try configuring port forwarding for your torrent client on the router. Depending on your client, the instructions for doing this varies. Bit Tornado, for instance is quite straightforward, although you will need to configure your router also. Again, instructions vary on a case by case basis. The general idea goes as follows. You set the BT (Bit Torrent) client to use a small range of ports eg 5000 to 5010. Assign a static (constant) IP address to your PCs wireless network card (email me if you're unsure how to do that). Then you configure the router to forward all traffic destined for ports 5000 to 5010 towards the IP address of your PC's wireless card.

As a final thought, you could change internet providers or find where your local exchange is and move house ; ) Another point to consider beyond all this is that most internet providers now implement bandwidth throttling or "shaping" to network traffic meaning torrents will slow to a crawl no matter what you do to improve things. This normally occurs during "peak" hours ie 6am to 11pm.

The 54 Megabit per second is the maximum transfer rate between your computer and the router and has nothing to do with your broadband connection speed.

Using just one PC on the router will make it faster. Other than that you can only be as fast as your broadband is.

M = Megabit/sec

K = Kilobit/sec

M is roughly 1000 times faster.

The reason your download is taking so long is that the source(s) are slow. It has nothing to do with your connection.

To test your connection speed try this (type it into your browser or copy and paste it):

That 54Mbps is only the speed of your computers connection to the router, and nothing to do with your internet connection speed. So if you were transferring something from one computer to another through a home network through the router, you would be able to get this speed. Since you're downloading it from the internet, it depends on your internet connection.

The best way to improve your download speed is to change your broadband/cable package. It's this speed that determines how fast you can download. What speed is your internet? If it's 2Mbps, consider changing to an 8Mbps. If you're on 8Mbps, see if 20-24Mbps is available in your area etc.

Use something like speedtest.net to get an idea of your speed if you don't know it.

54.0Mbps ==54000.0kbps

That is the speed of the WIRELESS segment of your Internet connection.

Do you have DSL or cable broadband? This is probably the slowest speed of your Internet connection. PC's sharing decreases the speed.

I can get 100Mps from my vodafone mobile modem on a 3G signal. That sounds a bit slow for you. You are only as good as your network card. I would try upgrading you network card. It's easy, you just plug it in, install the driver and update in device manager if it's not an exe file.
