3550's are a little older, and while they are technically multilayer switches, they do not support NAT/PAT. It's surprising, actually, since they're otherwise very functional and supports all kinds of more advanced operations, but NAT/PAT is a no.

I checked the Network Address Translation Catalyst Switch Support Matrix on

Cisco's website and confirmed that the 3550 does not support NAT.

As long as you're running a flat broadcast domain (no vlans), you can just plug the gigastacks into place, and life will be good. If you have a segmented broadcast domain, you will need to configure trunking along with specifying the trunking type (ie 802.1q)
