I've found sites on how to create a website for free, but it looks like ultimately I'll have to pay to have the site. Is this true? Or are there free alternatives?

What you're actually paying for when you create a site is the domain registration. This means you're paying to have your own ".com". I personally use cjb.net, because there are no annoying popups, the URL is short, and you get your subdomain with a bunch of features. I write my files on my computer, then upload them to my cjb account, and BAM. visit [subdomain].cjb.net and there's my website. There are a bunch of other sites that offer this, but to have your own .COM, you'll need to pay. The reason for this is because when you sign up for a website, the host address (ip) for your server is registered with a domain registrar. When someone types in your URL, it goes to the DNS (domain name server), which works its way up the chain, and then ultimately returns your server's IP address. This registration is what you pay for. If you want to get a free domain, you're better off starting a non-profit organization, but it won't be a .com, it'll be a different extension..

There are a number of ways to have a free website. Some of these are places like bytehost.com, Wix.com, and Webs.com. Free hosting sites have a variety of levels of aid for you; some sites simply give you a server and you have to do the HTML coding and website creation yourself, while others (such as Wix) have a website editor built in, that will allow you to use a sort of drag and drop interface to create your pages without having to ever actually write code.

However, free sites will always make you use a subdomain (i.e. yourwebsite.wix.com) instead of a proper domain (i.e. yourwebsite.com). If you want your own domain name to go to your website, you will almost always have to pay. However, domain name registration is generally not that expensive; for everything that goes along with it, it generally costs about $20 - 30 per year.

Another note is that most free website hosting places have a subscription option as well. This usually allows you to have access to more features, and occasionally sites will throw in a free domain name if you subscribe. You should be aware that if you go with a free hosting plan, there will be limitations on what you can do. For instance, many sites will put their ads on your website if you're on a free plan.

Good luck!

Basically, you dont need the domain name or anything, if you will use any free website builder like Webnode, Wix or Weebly. These systems are intuitonal so just go on their website and start to create something, you will see it is simple and free.

You could also look for other alternatives. I'm using imcreator.com because it's free and easy to build without having to know html or css. Besides it also has good-looking templates and lots of catchy stock photos for free. I really advise you to try it!

You must register a domain name with a registrar. They all charge a fee.

There's a few free domain names out there, but any of them that are .com's, .net, .org you will have to pay for, unless you win a contest. http://atro-city.net/post/79269920053/domains-for-tumblr

You can get hosted for free, but if you're going to get hosted for free I highly recommend using tumblr, blogger, or wordpress. However, you cannot use your own domain with wordpress.com for free. You'll have to get a free host like emnhosting.com or x10hosting.com and download wordpress.ORG and install it to your hosting account - or if you get hosted with one of the above, you can do a one click no hassle install of wordpress.
