Question:
Why do I get a connection timeout on our webmail system, but the smtp and pop settings work normally?

This is driving me nuts! We have a small workgroup LAN that we use to share an broadband connection to the Internet. This is done via a router with a built in firewall. Everything is functioning as normal but I noticed whenever we'd try to access webmail the connection will timeout. Personally I use an email client and the smtp and pop servers work without a hitch. It's only when we try to access the webmail we can't get to it. I've run traceroutes on several remote sites and they can access the site just fine.

Right now I'm wondering if it's a problem with our network or is it the ISP. It's just strange that we can get to almost every other site just fine but the webmail is timing out.

I'd appreciate any input anyone can offer me. I'm at a loss.

Almost all mail clients try to download the mail for 5 minutes (300 seconds) max. If the connection to the server cannot be established within that it returns an error.

But in the case of a browser that works on HTTP protocol, it can work faster.

The only solution for this to upgrade your connection to a faster one.

have you checked to make sure your IIS service is running? If it is stopped, that would cause the symptoms you are describing. also make sure the http ports are open to the server on the firewall.

have you tried disabling the firewire that should fix the problem
