I recently installed opensues 11.3 on an old dell desktop. I downloaded the OS to a DVD and installed linux that way. However as I finished the set up the auto-configuration would crash and the computer would freeze (and yes i am sure it froze and was not just thinking) So i retried the installation and chose not to go through the auto configuration. It worked and i was able to log into the "root" account. Everything worked fine until i tried to connect to the internet. I opened YaST and chose network configuration. it began to go down a check list checking various system parts/settings but froze when it got to the second item on the checklist "Read driver information". the progress bar is about 10% full and says "Detecting network devices..." (this happens to be the first item on the checklist and is checked.) I have tried restarting the computer and it froze again in the exact same spot.

I have a network card built into my dell and i also have a linksys usb wireless card plugged in. I have also tried to connect via ethernet but to no avail.

I am new to linux but am a very proficient computer/windows user. I need help on getting the computer to connect to my home network. If i need to download a driver update from online i would appreciate as much detail as possible.

without the exact models (brand, model number) of the desktop, the network card and the wireless adapter (USB, PCI, ISA ?????) it is impossible to help you, alas...

you would get better luck posting on the opensuse forums, that being said if an old desktop chances are it it not supported but... you may use yast to configure the driver true you would have to connect to the internet say at a friends place and like other poster said on the suse forums ask how to configure say " a dell (actually a broadcom card) with yast

short answer isn't any. A instant card for the pc is the only way and that they are relatively no longer that high priced. of direction if an ethernet twine could be run to the prevailing router that is ok too by way of fact the pc possibly already has a LAN port.
