Question:
I need to extend (And ideally split) an Ethernet cable. How do I do this?

We recently set up a desktop computer in one of the bedrooms farthest from our Cable Modem. Stretching a single cable from the modem throughout the entire house to this room unfortunately isn't an option.

Fortunately, someone else had previously ran an Ethernet cable through the walls, coming out of a bedroom right next to the one with the desktop.

Ideally, I'd like to take this line (Connecting from the main modem into Bedroom B) and split it so that I can run two Ethernet cables into Bedroom A (Next to Bedroom B) and connect both the Xbox and desktop to the internet.

How easy/possible is this? I'm fine with computers, but networking issues has always been my weak point. Money is an issue, we need to spend as little money as possible.

Also, would splitting an Ethernet line weaken the strength? Would this affect online gaming for the desktop and Xbox?

You can't split an Ethernet cable... what you have to do is buy a switch or hub (it really doesn't matter which) and hang it on the bedroom end of the existing cable. Then you plug two new cables into two other sockets of the switch or hub. That's as hard as it gets.

What you need... a 10/100 autosensing switch or hub, a power supply for it and two short Ethernet leads. Cost under £20/$20 for all the kit. You only need 3 ports, so a 5 port switch or bigger would do.

No configuration is needed... hubs are 'dumb' repeaters and 'switches' are smart self configuring things... switches are cheap now, so you may not find a hub available anyway.

enable's make sparkling issues as you're confusing issues on your write up. a million. you have a broadband connection that feeds information superhighway provider at your house of residing workplace laptop. Your writing exhibits you're straight away linked to the modem and there is no different gadget between modem and your laptop. 2. you would be getting an IMAC G3 and prefer to connect it to the information superhighway yet do no longer prefer to purchase a instantaneous community card to try this. 3. i don't understand your remark a pair of instantaneous router as you do no longer communicate a instantaneous router being interior the circuit everywhere. 4. you're thinking in case you are able to connect archives strains up very such as you do telephone strains for a telephone extension of an identical line. you are able to no longer try this. Now right it is what you're able to do: a million. purchase a gateway router with a outfitted in community change. 2. connect the modem feed to the WAN port of the router. usually a bypass cat5 cable is discover for this yet often times a right this moment is mandatory; examine the instruction manual. 3. connect each and all of the desktops into LAN ports of the change with separate cat5 cables.

I would simply get a small 4 port router to connect the cable to in that room. Then use another cable to run from there to the next room. Example in the link below:
