How would I get an additional ip address? My internet provider doesn't provide 2 but they told me that I could by hard wiring to a router. I have two computers and one is a laptop and is using the wireless feature to connect to the internet and the other is a desktop and is hard wired. How would I go by getting a second IP address and where would I look to see if I would have one if I hard wire my laptop to the router? Thanks in advance!!!!

If you have a modem then every computer connected to it, either wireless or by a wired connection will have the same "external" ip address. The roouter will then rout trafic going to that one ip address to the correct pc. each pc will have its own internal ip address.

so if you external ip is 76.45.12.111 and your internal address is 192.168.1.101, when you open up a website on 192.168.1.101 the router tells the website to send information to 76.45.12.111, then the router says to send it to 192.168.1.101

so basically the concept is it routs trafic from one ip to multiple computers.

if you want more than one external ip address you will have to buy a second modem. These modems can be bought at a local walmart or best buy. just hook up a cable splitter (if you have cable, or a phone line splitter if you have DSL) and hook the two wires into the two modems, then restart each modem, each modem should then have its own individual external IP address and you could hook routers up to your computers or to routers, then hook each computer(or set of comptuers if you have more than 2 computers) to the appropriate routers.

this will be your setup before:

| --> internal ip 1

external IP -> router --| --> internal ip 2

this will be your setup after

external IP1 -> router --> internal IP

external IP2 -> router --> internal IP

hope this helps. if you need more help contact helpdesk@odpoa.com

I would say that you don't buy IP addresses from your provider, but Internet services. If you would like to connect more that one computer to your internet, you will need to buy a router. To buy router you have two choices, wired router and wireless router depending on what you really need. Before you make your choice on that you need to know that most of the recent wireless router give you the option to hook more than 4 computers using wires.

I hope this will help you figure out what you need.

I assume you have a router with multiple Ethernet ports. When you connect your laptop to the router via Ethernet cable, it will pause for a second while it obtains an IP address, and then viola! You should be able to use the internet. NOTE: Be sure you have a router and not a switch, as a switch will not provide multiple IPs.
