Your internet speed is only ever as fast as the slowest link in the chain between you and your ISP. Putting a wireless router on a network that only has a max speed of 1Mbps won't magically bump that up to 2Mbps. But it also won't make it any slower, either.

Wi-Fi will almost always be faster then 1mbps (mine ticks along at about 1.3 Gbps).

The speed will always be limited by the slowest connection on the route between your computer and the one you are communicating with, so if your data has to go over 2mbps Wi-Fi WLAN and 1mbps ADSL to the Internet, then you'll be limited to 1mbps.

Generally,WiFi speed is slower than ethernet. And if you want faster wifi speed, you can try to use a 5GHz band router, because it will have less interference.Or you can try to use My WIFI Router software. It would turn wired into wireless network directly based on a laptop.

If your internet caps at 1mbps, using wifi will not make it faster.

In fact, you will probably see less than 1mbps. If you have multiple users on the same wifi, then it is just that much slower.

Your router/modem set up might say that it can handle let's say 30mbps. This just means that if you bought internet speeds greater than 30mbps; you will only see 30mbps max. If you feed it 1mbps of internet, then you probably didn't need to shell out the extra money to make your router handle 30mbps, because you are only going to see max 1mbps.

If you only have 1Mbps internet, then using Wifi will only get you 1Mbps.

Wifi connections (locally) can be super fast (as the other answer stated)

But your actual INTERNET speeds are limited by whatever you are paying for. So if you're paying for 1Mbps, it doesn't matter if your Router supports 1Gbps, you'll only get 1Mbps internet (or slower, since Wifi tends to be slower than a wired ethernet connection)
