Let me see if I got this correct: You have an on-board wireless adapter in a laptop, but you are having an issue enabling it, or getting it to work. You currently do not have a working internet connection where you are at. Because of this, you are unable to download the driver(s) and software you require for this on-board adapter. Is this a correct summary of your issue? If not, please clarify as it is not clear in what you wrote thus far. I am not criticizing you, only pointing out this lack, which is why some people just wrote, "yes", or other silly responses to your question. Clarity is key in getting the proper help you require at any online forum, including this one.
OK, now, if this adapter truly is on-board, it is already installed, and therefore the driver(s) and software are also installed.
Try this: For XP--Start--Control Panel--System Information. Once the System Information applet is open, click on the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager. When device manager opens, click on the Network Adapter + sign, to open the list it contains, then right click on this adapters name, and select Properties. In Properties, on the first tab, down at the bottom is a drop down button, click on it, and select "Enable, Use this Device", click Apply, then OK, and then close Device Manager.
Now, in order for you to actually use the Wireless Adapter, you will need access to a Wireless Network Connection. If one is not in your home, go to a HotSpot, or another such place where an WiFi network exists. Once you are in that location, click on Network Connection, then click on Show Wireless Network Connections, click on the one in the list you wish to connect to, enter any required password, and see if it connects.
For Vista, just begin typing Device Manager into the Search box, then click on it when it appears in the list, and continue with the instructions above.
Now, if you really do not have the adapter driver(s) and software installed, which would mean it really is not an on-board adapter, but one you installed yourself, as the definition of "on-board" is that the laptop came with it pre-installed, you will need to take the adapter out of its slot before you install the driver(s) and software required. You only insert the adapter when you are instructed to by the installation process.
But, first you need the driver(s) and software for that adapter, and it should be on the CD which came with the physical hardware. If it didn't, I recommend you take it back to the store you purchased it from and exchange it. All adapters you purchase come in a box which contains a CD with all you need for installation. I know because I have installed many adapters from scratch, from USB, to PCI additions.
I think you are attempting to install a PCI add-in adapter slot, and then the adapter slides into that slot, is that correct? Which is why you think it is called an "on-board" adapter, because you are installing it internally. While that would seem to be the proper name to call such an adapter, it isn't correct, you would call this an "Add-On PCI Slot and Adapter.
I do not know what you mean by an "not working internet port". Internet does not have "ports", but routers and hubs do, so you must mean your router/hub is not working right now. Is that correct?
Why is it not working? Has somebody disabled the internet connection coming into your home? Is there perhaps a hardware device sitting between the router and the network, such as a Network Cop? I use the Network Cop hardware device to shut down our network connection when it is not in use, or when I wish to stop others from accessing our connection. So, is this something which a parent has done, or a room mate perhaps? I suggest you speak with whomever is in charge of the connection and ask if you can temporarily have access just long enough to download the drivers and software you require.
Now, if this is a used adapter, I can see how the CD is not with it, and why you would need to download the data for the installation. You can use a different computer to download the installation package, burn it to disk, or load it on a thumb drive, then manually insert it into this computer as you would have done with the original CD had you had possession of it.
Go to the website, plug in the version and/or model number in the drivers and software area of the website, and the download will be made available to you. Just download it to the desktop of the other computer then place it on removable media, then insert that media into the computer you wish to complete the installation. However, please remember to take the adapter out of the slot before you begin installing the drivers and software, as the installation process will tell you when the correct time is for inserting it into the slot.
I hope this helps clarify things for you. It is difficult to really give you a clear cut answer because of the lack of information in your question. It would help to know what OS you are using, whether or not this adapter is new or used, if you have the CD or DVD that comes with it, etc. All the pertinent information would be greatly appreciated in order to fully and completely assist you in any issue.
Good luck and I hope you get this resolved quickly. Don't be overwhelmed, it is not difficult, you just need the correct drivers and software. As I said before, download it to a different computer, place it on removable media, then install it on the system you wish to complete the installation of the add-on slot and adapter.
