internet sharing in a remote room?

What I have is: DSL coming into the house at one end. This goes into an ADSL modem, then into an ethernet hub and then is sent out via cat5 cable to two computers. One computer is in the same room as the modem and hub. The other computer is 3 rooms away connected via the cat5 cable.
From time to time I like to use my laptop in the other room, but do not need nor want the wireless conection, so I unplug my desktop and plug the laptop in.
QUESTION: can I split the connection in the other room to use the laptop and desktop at the same time? I have only one rj45 plug in the room. Is there like a 'Y' splitter that would. I understand the speed might be split.
I was thinking I could use another hub, but that does not work.
Any help or idea's. I do not want to have to pull another cat5 cable.

Yes, you can use another hub or a router. If you use a router, the cable must plug into the WAN port of the router. You can then have connections for the computer and laptop.



If you have a hub, that should work without any issues at all. Be sure that the hub is connected properly; some require the network connection to com in to port 1 or a special port. I've also seen some where a switch has to be set correctly to identify that its being connected to another network device.

Go from the modem to a router. Connect computer 1 to the router. and the computers in the remote room to to the hub that is connected to another router port. You can use lots of hubs IF the router is in the mix first. I have three hubs with 7 PC's.

You can get a device that plugs into a electrical outlet near the DSL router and conntect an ethernet cable from the router or hub there then another of the same device plugs into the electrical outlet near the remote compute with an ethernet cable from this 2nd device to your remote computer. I bought them at CompUsa; but I imagine they are widely available

Just get a non intelligent hub and run 2 3ft or whatever length you need cable from it to your devices... ( U just need a mini )

You do need an extra hub, or you can use 2 HomePlugs.
