Question:
Wireless connection security?

So I have a wireless connection. Liksys router. Modem connects the router to my computer; There are two laptops in my house, a dell and a macbook. Those are the only two laptops I want on my connection. I have my computer and 360 hooked up to the router as well, but with an actual ethernet chord.

There used to be a password on our wireless connection, but my brother somehow un-did it. He doesn't remember how he did it; he also changed the SSID. When I tried changing it back to what it used to be, with the network key.. the dell wouldn't connect, but the mac would- but it would still be an unsecured connection.

I don't know how to configure the connection, so that only we can access it. There are so many people accessing our connection [we live in a big apartment complex] that we can' even use our own internet.

I have the linksys CD but it asks for a password, and I don't know what that is or could be.

Any help on how to set up a password, or block IP's would be greatly appreciated

Get your MAC addresses. In a Windows computer, that's Start/Run/cmd

In the window, type

ipconfig/all

You want the physical address - 6 groups of numbers/letters. (The letters are A-F - there's no O, it's zero) There's a way to do it on a Mac, but I can't tell you how.

Reset the router, so that you're in a known state. Connect one of the wire-connected computers (with a browser) to http://192.168.1.1/WL_WPATable.asp Select WPA Personal. Type in your key. (Also write it on paper, and tape that paper to the side of the router, or where the LIMKSYS name is - anywhere there are no ventilation holes. You'll also be changing the login password, so don't cover the paper with tape yet.) Click Save Settings, then OK when it comes back. Make sure that the pass phrase is long, complex (punctuation marks, a mix of letters, upper and lower case, and numbers.) and not something someone could guess, like the family's birth dates.

Go to the Wireless MAC Filter. (Mac computer and MAC address have nothing to do with each other.) Enable filtering. Edit the MAC Filter list. Put in both physical addresses. Those will be the only computers that can connect wirelessly. Save.

Go to Administration. Change the password. (The login will be admin - lower case.) Write the password on that paper. Now tape over it with clear tape. (That will be the login and password you have to enter when you try to connect to 192.168.1.1)

Once you have both computers connected to the router, go back to http://192.168.1.1/Wireless_Basic.asp and disable Wireless SSID Broadcast.

That's about as secure as you can make a wireless router.

Just type inside the explorer 192.168.1.1 and make configuration. Like enabling SSID or making MAC filtering I mean to but every PCs and consoles MAC address tomake specific connection the pc or the game console you have.

The WAP or WEP password is in the back of the router just see it.

Once you have reset the router password and then connected to your router, you will then need to setup wireless security. This is an option an all wireless routers. Turn on security and add a password.

after permitting WEP have you ever then configured your instantaneous gadget to apply WEP? My advice is to eliminate the configuration on the gadget, substitute teh router and then re-connect. If available use WPA, its extra guard than WEP and has extra desirable overall performance.
