2 questions :
I've got a server running with GoDaddy and want to make another server at home for backups and use it as a development server.
The server at godaddy is linux and runs redhat fedora.

2. I saw redhat has licensing fees but ubuntu doesn't. But if i want to run a development server it has to be redhat so it matches my server correct? Can i run redhat fedora without the licensing? :D

2nd question. I bought my server with raid harddrives so when I'm setting up the server it asks if i want to partition the drive in a guided manner, in whole, with LVM, and with LVM with encryption. My goal is to mirror what happens on harddrive 1 to harddrive 2. which option should I choose?

Thank you!

Redhat offers several products. The Redhat line is pay-for. Fedora is free. It depends what kind of development you're doing, but you can probably do so with any linux variety with varying degrees of difficulty. Check out http://fedoraproject.org/ if you want your system set up most like your remote server.

RAID can be done in either hardware or software. If done in hardware, your OS will only see a smaller drive that's the result of raid redundancy. Configuration of this nature will be by way of controller card jumpers, or a bios-like menu accessible on boot.

So if your OS install shows 2 drives and all the space available, hardware raid is not happening. All major linux distrubutions are capable of software raid. Check out this how-to, which specifically addresses software raid on fedora and ubuntu systems:

Lubuntu (with an "L") would be gentle-weight adequate for a splash speed. yet with a P-4 and 512 ram you will desire to have the means to run Ubuntu without issues. i desire to propose 9.10- no longer 10.04. Linux mint 8 could be greater elementary to apply. Its my decision. the two Linux Mint 9 and Ubuntu 10.04 have been released, yet the two nonetheless have buggs. except you're rather "techy" i does no longer attempt them yet. I actual have Linux Mint 8 engaged on an old Dell P-3 866 with 384k ram. Its a tad sluggish, yet runs ok. A P-4 a million.4ghz with 512k ram would desire to do advantageous.
