I have an IP and I need to connect to the internet

Alright...I have this router http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=136493

My dad has the same router. Our internet connection comes into his router and then from a cord goes to my router.
He has given me an IP, Subnet mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Server address.

I can make it work if I plug the network cord from dads router into my laptop but I cant connect if I want to use wireless. How do I set it up?

You need to setup your router as DHCP. Do not manually enter the info that your dad gave you.



Or, a better alternative would be to just use one router- in this case your wireless router. He can use the wried connection and you can use WiFi. Then you would manually configure it with the info. he gave you.



Having 2 routers in one house really isn't necessary..but if you really want to, just configure your router as DHCP and you will be done.

On your PC, go to wireless setup wizard, it will, as you go through the set-up, ask you for a WEP Code, this is normally found on the back of the Wireless Router. I.E. your Dad's. These wireless systems do not work properly unless they are in unison with each other, that is why the WEP code is important. It is also a security measure to stop anyone with a laptop or mobile phone with Bluetooth capabilities from gaining access to your PC. The WEP code should be 10 or 11 characters in length. You only need one router, your dads.



the purpose of a router is to allow 2 or more PCs to share an internet connection. In my case - 5 PCs - one router.



If you have a poor wifi signal from your dads router, then you want to set your router up to be an "access point", and move it physically closer to where you will be using the internet.
