Question:
email delivery / potential spam or IP/Domain issue?
2008-01-05 11:30:48 UTC
I am very concerned that the email was not delivered since I am selling a very expensive item that this individual is very interested in and has gone through bidpay to purchase. I do not have his location which tells me something is up! How do I identify problem IP's and domain issues. If an IP changes every time this person sends me an email should I be concerned? Thank you for your assistance. Gina

You can do an IP lookup. Below is a link to one of many, just do a search for reverse IP lookup.

If his changing IP address puts him all over the world minutes apart, the person is probably using proxies to disguise his location. That is a red flag for sure.

If you do not know where he is, and he won't tell you, you should also be concerned.

I would, to protect yourself, however he pays, make sure that all funds are legal, and cleared, long before you send him anything. If it is a bank or a wire transfer, I would get something in writing from the bank that is is cleared and a legal transfer.

If you have some records of the IP addresses you have, you could go to www.dnsstuff.com and do wome quick research on the addresses to see if they might be all in the the same place. I have a mail server running for my company and it is on a dynamic dsl connection that is tracked by dyndns.org and constantly updated so that I don't have to uprade to static connection yet. If the e-mails seem to be coming from all over the place, I would be very suspicious and absolutely require full payment and make sure that they can't recall the payment before supplying the product if it is valuable.

Have him use Pay Pal or some other recognized method of secure payment.

If he insists on checks, or credit cards, don't send him a thing until you have the cash in hand.

If he want goods first - say too bad!!
