Question:
How can I solve my wireless router problem?
2010-05-26 03:52:22 UTC
I have a Zyxel Prestige 660HW-T1 router and occasionally the Internet light goes out and my laptop says I only have local access to the Internet. The WLAN and DSL lights are still lit. I have to reset my router for the Internet light to come on again.

Not too sure if it's any help, but the diagnostics when I can't connect to the Internet are as follows:-

noise margin downstream: 5 db
output power upstream: 16 db
attenuation downstream: 62 db
carrier load: number of bits per symbol(tone)

I am guessing you have Vista!

Have you tried the trouble shoot, open icon bottom right, connect, then trouble shoot.

Its all a c-r-a-p shoot. you can try static IP, you can disable IP6v, you can try entering your DNS, you can disable your DHCP broadcast, you can update your drivers, you can restore your computer, you can uninstall/reinstall stuff. Basically what it comes down to is that there is no guranteed fix for any of this. My notebook would come back online local and internet after being in local only for hours for no apparent reason and then just drop off and back into local only for no reason and there was no certain way to get it back online. This goes for both the Wireless and the normal Cat5 wired. Although with it being plugged in to CAT5 i did have more success at it being online after reboots but only 25% of the time.

I talked to several computer dealers in town today and they all agreed its a craps shoot for Vista and wireless networking and have been unable to repair alot of the computers that they are seeing. So if you get a chance get a dual XP/Vista machine or just stay XP til MS resolves this issue.

You might have problems with the noise on the line. I once had such problems.

Solutions (to check) include:

1) Make sure you have good filters on all phone sockets in the house

2) Remove all phones & filter from the walls, make sure you don't have any phone conencted to the actual socket you're connecting the router to, then try and see if the noise values get better

3) If it does, it might mean you might need to either give up the phone on the same socket as your router, OR better yet, you might want the phone company separate this specific socket from all others so that it has better performance, OR you might need to get a slower line from your ISP (check the line with them, they can see the reception & noise & disconnections on their side), OR you might need to change ISP which has a local DSL center closer to your house

Check that the wireless network setup on your laptop shows DHCP enabled. The Windows wizard often misses this. If it's not, the laptop doesn't notice when the router decides to change the IP address and you get this problem.

I have tested the same router, and to be honest, it is flakey to say the least.

I had exactly the same issues you are mentioning even after upgrading the Firmware, so I fear that you may need to purchase a new router.

the problem seems to be in modem ,

first check the telephone line (it has any noise created by any of the power line with it)

and update the driver if it not cleared the issue .

finally do reset the hardware (modem) and reinstall the configuration

Your SNR and attenuation values are high. Get your line checked by line man.
