How to connect a wireless router to a Virgin Media wired modem?

I have a Tiscali Thomson TG585 v7 wireless router and a Virgin Media modem, model no.E08C007. I was told that by connecting the router to the wired modem, I can have wireless internet in my house. I connected the modem to the wall, how I normally do (I think it's a fibre optic cable or something) and to the mains, and I connected the router to the modem via the ethernet cable. The router was also connected to the mains. All of the lights were on for both the modem and the router.
I tried to connect to the Wi-Fi on my iPhone. It came up and I typed the password that is on the bottom of my router. It verified the connection and said I have full signal, however, when I tried to access the internet, it came up with the Tiscali page saying "DSL connection is down". The same happened on my laptop.
I don't know why this came up as this is not the type of connection I am using.
Is there a way that it will work as a normal Wi-Fi router, even though it is wired?
I also have a PC in my house and I don't think it is Wi-Fi enabled, it is a Dell Dimension E520. Do I need a wireless adaptor or some sort of USB adaptor to be able to use Wi-Fi on it? Do you need a specific one for each router or does it not matter?

Thanks

I would also say yeh try getting a free one out of virgin first.

Secondly with avoiding anything to technical it sounds like your Tiscali router is a DSL router (ie designed for internet that comes through phone line) you need a cable router. These are designed to be plugged into modem from the likes of Virgin unlike DSL routers that have a modem built into. Be are of the difference of the two. Keeping it simple the two work differently. So you need to go get yourself a Cable router. something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/134991-d-link-wireless-n-cable-router-dir-615?utm_source=google&utm_medium=products

On the second bit, yeh you can get USB wifi adapters. There is various versions of wifi (B/G/N) but if you buy a new adaptor they are normally backward compliant. something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/155640-tenda-wireless-n300-usb-adapter-w322u-v2-0

can i just add. if there is ever the option of going wired. DO IT, wireless can bring various problems, handy but can slow your speed etc.

The router needs to be configured. There may be a utility with the router for doing this. The router will also have its own IP address, accessible in a web browser - a series of numbers, such as 192.168.2.1, or something similar. This address should be on a label or printed on the router, or can be found in the instruction book, or on the manufacturer's website.

Access this page by connecting the router and modem to the PC via ethernet and use it to configure the modem according to the instructions. If unsure what to do, get someone else to do it. You will need the configuration utility to do things like selecting a password to secure your wifi.

Unfortunately you \re trying to connect an ADSL router to a cable modem. You were incorrectly informed - this won't work - you need a cable router, sorry no amount of fiddling will help as they use different protocols

Contact virgin and tell them your modem isn't working they will send you a new modem with built in router. (ready set up) Your modem is way out of date for the systems your using. It's free grab it.
