Question:
why is my Wireless connection better than my wired?

I have just moved house, and swapped ISP and router at the same time. I was under the impression that a wired ethernet connection was faster than a wireless signal, however this isnt the case. by using speed tests I have found that my two laptops with wireless connections are getting around a 12 mbps speed.

my desktop is showing a poor 2 mbps! and is connected to the router via a 10 metre ethernet cable.

any suggestions as to why my wired connection is so bad compared with my wireless devices?

Hello Gatesy,

There are many factors which can influence transfer speed over a network. the cable used should be checked as there are different classes of ethernet cable, you should be on "Cat 5" or "Cat 5e" for 100Mbps speeds. And make sure to check for damage points (kinks etc.) as these can look fine from the outside but internally damage an ethernet cable.

Also check that where you have routed the cable does not pass through large/powerful magnetic fields (not likely in a modern home) these may be due to large CRT televisions, though this is probably negligble on a good Cat 5e cable, and would likely degrade wireless signals more.

also (if available) try different ethernet ports on the router as the one you have tried may be faulty.

Finally check the PC itself, if the laptops are newer it may just be that the 'older' desktop hasnt got the processing power to deal with fast network transfers and other things at the same time, and bear in mind that the internet is shared with the other computers in your house (and the annoying bloke down the road who likes to download large files,[see contention ratio on wikipedia])

Wireless Faster Than Wired

On a fairly new PC or Laptop the GigaBit wired connection is always faster and better than the wireless.

On an older PC or Laptop wireless might be better.

Usually wired is better and faster than wireless.

Also the length of the wire can cause some loss of speed, but 10 meter should be ok. Maybe your wire is shot (busted), try replacing with new top quality wire.

under pressure out connections are lots swifter and robust than on the spot connections. in case you go with uninterrupted information superhighway connection, use under pressure out connections. Or in case you go with your place to look twine-unfastened, use on the spot connections. Uninterrupted connection with under pressure out or neat-looking yet might disconnect on the spot.
