I have a 5 year old router and I have a pretty slow connection. My download speed is 130KB/S (yes that's very slow) and I'm wondering if my 5 year old router is slowing my internet speed at all. My ISP is Cox if that helps.

Is that Kilobytes or kilobits? KB is usually Kilobytes, which would be ~1 Mbps. Are you using WiFi by chance? If so try connecting directly to the router with a network cable. If your performance improves then its a problem with wireless, which could be the radio on the device or something with the RF environment. You could also try connecting your computer directly to the ISP's device (modem) without the router. If it gets faster then you know its the router.

yeah, it defintely can, mine did. that's too many years old. get an ASUS RT-AC87U.
the procs in the routers in those days were like 200MHz. today it's 1.2-1.3GHz. and the number of simultaneous connections went up from 10 to 25 (because today's routers have 256MiB RAM).
they also have gigabit ports. I watched as my mom's ols LINKSYS WRT54GS b/g rouiter using a wired connection and 100Mbps ethernet could do no more than 12Mbps/3Mbps on our 22Mbps/5Mbps internet. it was like a speed cap that wouldn't go away. took the router out of the way and got 25Mbps. so I upgraded said router to a linksys E4200 (now I have ASUS RT-AC87U because of iOS device compatibility reasons etc.)
I have 59Mbps of 50Mbps internet speed, my new router easily handles this.

If your home WiFi router is too old or too outdated, it may not be able to function as well as newer routers. Any electronic gadget can suffer damage from heat over a period of time. But don't worry, you can improve your WiFi just with My WIFI Router, this software will turn your windows laptop into a free WiFi hotspot just with a click. Also you can add the device to blacklist, limit internet speed and so on.

130 KB/S works out to about 1 Mbps which might be weak old wireless-b speed. What is the advertised speed of your cable plan? And is anybody else doing anything on your home Internet. Sometimes when people have slow Internet they neglect to mention that they are doing torrents (which can slow up other Internet use if not throttled in the torrent program).

well it depends... if you are hardwired then no it wouldnt... if you are using wireless then your wifi standard could be slowing you down.... most of the time with speed it means that your connection to your isp is slow
