Why does my laptop say there is a network cable unplugged?

It was working fine a few months ago, not it keeps saying that. I've triple checked the cables and nada. My brother set it up, I have no knowledge of WiFi, but am not completely helpless. Should I buy a new router or something. I really want to get my laptop up. I think I also lost the password.

The issue could be that your power configuration is set to turn off the network card after a certain amount of idle time - that fits in with you leaving the laptop for 20 mins.

Right-click "my computer", then click "properties". Click the "hardware" tab then "device manager". Find your network adapter then right-click on it and click properties. Select the "power management" tab and if the check box for "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is ticked, clear it.

The possibility on top is the first one to check. Nr. 2 is that you connect wireless, have the Ethernet adapter still activated and the cable in fact IS unplugged. Then you could deactivate the Ethernet adapter and reactivate it when connecting to wired networks. Nr. 3 is that you have a "crossover"cable connected which will not work for connecting to a network. Crossover cables are connecting between two computers. For connecting computers to modems or routers "straight" lines are required. Connecting a crossover cable to modems or routers lets your computer think its disconnected because no signal is detected.

Do you actually use an ethernet cable to connect to the router, or do you use the wireless function?

Which version of Windows are you using?

Is the laptop connected now?

Please post back with detailsâ˜ș

EDIT: Lovely, the laptop (which is the problem machine) has XP, but is it wireless or wired????

There might be some with your cable connection wiring.

I'm guessing this is not the computer you're using now?
