Question:
Router changing IP by itself?

OK. Here the deal. My router, a WGR614 v6 54 Mbps Wireless, changed it's IP all by itself to a 10.0.0.1 address. I did not change this. I had it with the 192.168.1.1 address. It also changed the starting and ending IPs of the DHCP server in the router. I got the latest firmware flashed to it about a month ago and haven't seen any problems till now....I know this just happened. It's not like I didn't notice it and it was like this for a long period of time. It was not more than a couple hours between the times I checked my statuses of my NICs and noticed this change. Anyone give me possible reasons for this? Thanks!

Someone knew your password and went in and changed it. It wont do it on it's own. If you left the default password as admin like some people do then it would be easy. Change it back and change your password.

The question really relates to how the router is connected to the internet. If it is through a cable modem, then that device is responsible for obtaining an IP address from the ISP, and any device behind the modem (such as a router) should be using DHCP to maintain a valid connection to the modem. If you disable DHCP in the router, then the router probably disconnected from the modem when the modem renegotiated its IP address with the ISP.

You obviously missed the stage of saving your settings, or have done a router reset. There is always a save, activate or submit button or link, and you need to click this after you make any changes. Many routers will only save one change at the click, and the linkm9is sometimes in the index part of the configuration pages. If you do miss it, the changes remain while it is running, but are lost if power is ever removed. Even a small power dip can allow it to reboot, and this will lose everything.

This happens sometimes and is nothing to worry about.

You can try resetting your router and that might bring it back to your old IP address. To do that, turn off your PC and your router and cable modem. Wait a couple of minutes.

Then power back on your cable modem. Wait a minute then turn back on your router and PC and see if that helps.

Also, your router has a reset button you can use, or login from your web browser to your router and reset it through the admin web menu.

Sometimes your ISP can change your IP address for whatever technical reasons they might have.

the router has two IP

one that connects to your ISP and the other that connects to your computers (network devices).

the 10.0.0.1 is the default to your network devices. it is set by the manufacturer of the router.

the gateway of the first computer be 10.0.0.2, the next device would be 10.0.0.3 and so on

No problem with IP changes, it doesn't do anything to your internet.
