Verizon FIOS and a Linksys Router?

I used to have Verizon FIOS hooked up to the Actiontec router, wired to a desktop and wirelessly connected to a laptop. But during a recent electrical storm, the Actiontec router got fried. I bought a new Linksys WRT54G2 router that I was assured would work in my situation. Now, the Linksys router cannot see the FIOS connection at all. Using the setup wizard from Linksys, the connection is undetected. I can plug the CAT5 cable from the FIOS box directly into my laptop and get internet, but the desktop doesn't get internet when directly plugged in. The desktop gets "little to no connectivity" when plugged in directly. Can anyone make sense of this?

Two Things:

1) Call verizon to see what type of conenction you have to the internet. I'M betting your set up for DHCP...

While having Verizon on line have them "Break Lease"

2) Check the WAN Port of the router Some are defaulted for PPPoE and will not work, You'll have to change it to what ever Verizon says (PPPoE or DHCP).

If you had Internet service less than 1 year the router is under warrenty and Verizon"should" replace it..

Anywho that is where I would start at..

Hope this helps..

Electrical storms do weird things, and its possible that the FIOS box is intermitent because of it. But if the laptop will talk to the fios but not the desktop I would say that the FIOS is set to talk to only that MAC address. Connect to the router with an ether netcord and go into the setup as described in the manual. On the WAN screen it should give you the option to clone the MAC from your laptop. By the way make sure your plugging the FIOS into a WAN port on the router and not 1-4.

you may have to "clone" the mac address of the computer FIOS was setup on from withing the router setup page. You may also need some user name and password information.

get on the internet and get a firmware upgrade for your router and apply it according to the literature for your product.

I know with cable modes sometimes I have to unplug the modem and router and plug the model in first and then the router to get them to talk to eachother.

You should also make sure that your computers are pulling an IP address from the router. open a command window and type "ipconfig /all" the addresses will probably be in the 192.168.X.X range. If not, follow the router's instructions for setting up network settings on each computer.

definatly dont call verizon for a third party router they wont help. u need to piggyback it it wont affect ur landlord unless u removed his verizon router. but u can piggyback ur router to his throw ethernet sometimes it just works when u connect the ethernet to ur wan input if knot call linkssys cuz u have to bridge a port and dissable the dhcp

Press the reset button on the router. The default settings should work fine unless the router is defective.
