I'm new to linux, and this is just causing me a lot of trouble.I have looked at countless other solutions for this bug, and could not find one that works. I just recently installed it on another laptop.

ifconfig
enp2s0: flags=4099 MTU 1500
ether 98:fa:9b:e3:a6:23 txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
Rx errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
Tx packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
Tx errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

iwconfig enp2s0 essid
Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) : SET  failed on device enp2s0 ; Operation not permitted

Can you connect to net with a cable? If yes, then run update. Also while on software updater screen- select search for drivers and let it do the search.....it takes a few minutes. If it gives options- try them.

Do you know that your Ubuntu iso is good? Sometimes you may have to download another one and write it to a dvd or usb and try it. When you boot up on it- select "try Ubuntu" instead of "install". Once up and running- select the wifi icon in the top panel on the right side of screen. Open it and look for your wifi router. Click on it- enter your password- then try it out. If it works okay- then select install and go for it.

I have had a similar issue on ubuntu a couple years back....the problem was a broadcom driver on an older laptop. Connecting to the router with a cable solved the problem.

what does " iwconfig enp2s0" return?

You can usually use the NetworkManager to do wifi on Ubuntu.  Just select the network icon on the task bar. And make sure the wifi is enabled.

The problem is likely the network adapter and the drivers. There are a few that Ubuntu supports right out of the box as it were. When I was playing with Ubuntu, I just bought one of those off of ebay for cheap. Worked good enough and saved me a headache.
