ok sooo..... my hubbie and me have a laptop comp and originally he hooked up the router to my comp and he said something like since he hookep up the router to my comp first that it's progrmaed through my comp? IDK... anyways.... my comp took a shi* on me and i got rid of it. We share the same laptop comp now, and somehow since we are using the wi-fi on it, unknown people have access to use out comp and we keep getting realllyyyyyyy bad viruses on our comp which is like... so not cool.. anyways.. so i need help on learning how to Block unkown people or just removing their access to our comp. Like.... not allowing them to have any access to our comp period. I know that if we put our comp back on the desk or what not it'll help but we like chillen on the couch using the comp...... so if any of you know how to block people, or cutting them off from using our comp please insist me on how to do it please..... and no smart a$$ anwsers...... thats my job not yours. k then... - Tara ♥

What you need to do is log into your router, and secure it.

Basically put a password that a computer must enter to connect to your network.

The easiest way do the following:

Assuming your a Windows user go this:

Start, run--> type "cmd" hit enter.

Black box pop's up type the following:

ipconfig

hit enter.

The last # it gives you, the "gateway" write down that # and type that in on the website.

http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 examples:

a user name and password box should pop up, ask your 'hubbie' for the password. It's probably admin for both user name and password or it could be admin for user name and password could be blank.

Once your in, go to the wireless tab and setup security.

What I usually tell my customers is do a WEP key 64bit and make it your phone number with the area code.

WEP are not as secure but for the issue's your having, it should work.

Also consider cleaning your computer. It probably has viruses and or spyware. For that I would recommend professional help.

As Flicker said you have to enable the WPA-TKIP feature wich is a secret word (Not a password) to acces the router, then you need to enable the WiFi Client list to allow just the computers you want, to do this you need to write down the MAC address of the WiFi network card, just open the System Symbol or DOS console and type "ipconfig /all" withouth the quotation marks then seek for the line that says physycall address it has to be something like this 00:A1: etc.

then type that number in the client list of the router, with that you'll prevent any computer to access the router even if they try to hack on it.

Tara, Have your hubby, type in 192.168.1.1 in your Browser window, this opens up your Routers Utility.

Activate one of the 3 Security settings.

WEP

WPA

WPA-2 (is the best)

This will require anyone getting on the Internet to KNow a Password and Username before they can do anything.

If you are using wireless you need to set up wpa or wep encryption to protect your signal
