Step 1

Start-Control Panel

Open control panel on the PC that has the printer physically attached.

Step 2

Select "View Devices and Printers" under Hardware and Sound in Windows 7 to get to this screen. Windows XP has the option listed under "Printers and other hardware" in its control panel.

Step 3

Right Click on the printer you want to share and select printer properties. In my case it's the HP PSC 2200.

Step 4

Click on the tab labeled sharing. Make sure the option is checked. You can also rename the printer if you like or leave it at its default. Click ok when you're done and restart the computer if needed (Windows XP, Windows 2000 and 98/98SE machines will require a restart if the sharing is enabled/disabled or the network name is changed.)

Step 5

Now to the computer you want to print from that doesn't have the physical connection. In this case it's a laptop running Windows XP. Open control panel.

Step 6

Then select Network and Internet Connections.

Step 7

Now 'Right Click' on the network you use and click properties. In my case it's the wireless network to the left. If your network is wired then you're probably using the Local Area Connection. The network properties screen comes up. Ensure the setting "File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks" is listed and has a checkmark. If so..click ok and close the window. You have printer sharing installed,

Step 8

Now lets make sure your computers are in the same workgroup. Open control panel again.

Step 9

And select performance and maintenance.

Step 10

Then click System.

Step 11

Click the tab labeled "Computer Name" as shown above. This is where you can name both your computer and network. By clicking on the change button this prompt comes up, allowing you to assign names as you please. The default workgroup name is usually MSHOME or HOME. I suggest you change it to something more personal, for security reasons.

Step 12

If you change the workgroup name the following prompt will appear.

Step 13

Which requires a restart.

Step 14

Now that the printer is shared on the machine it's physically attached to, and all computers have the same workgroup names, we just need to install the printer on to the remote machine. Open control panel once again.

Step 15

And select "Printers and other hardware".

Step 16

If no printers are installed, the Add Printer Wizard pops up. If it doesn't open, click Install Printer on the left.

Step 17

Here's where you choose between local (physically attached) and network printers. Select network.

Step 18

And click Browse for a printer. Any printer installed and shared on another PC in your network will show up here.

Step 19

Now pick the printer you want to print to from the list. In this case it's the HP Printer attached to my desktop pc named POPS

Step 20

The warning comes up

Step 21

Click yes on the warning and decide whether you want the printer to be the default. The default printer is the printer that applications (such as Word) will list first and print to.

Step 22

Finish the wizard.

Step 23

Now when you go to print something..say a document from MS Word, the network printer shows as the selection. You're done!

Connecting to a Windows Network Printer Starting the Connection Log on to CFS in the normal way as an ordinary user. From the Start menu, select the option Printers and Faxes. Double-click on Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard. Click on the Next button to display the dialog shown below. Ignore the misleading instructions in this particular dialog box provided by Microsoft. The installation option for local printers will be disabled if you are logged on as a CFS user. Ensure that the Network printer option is selected and click on the Next button. The wizard will present several ways of locating the required network printer. When a Local Administrator has shared a printer from a CFS client or departmental server, the printer is displayed in the Active Directory by default. In addition, important queues such as those for charged A4 printing are always included in the Directory. To view the Directory, ensure that the option Find a printer in the Directory is selected and press on the Next button. Follow the instructions in the next section to locate a Printer Published in the Active Directory. If the Local Administrator has chosen not to publish a printer in the Active Directory, you can connect by selecting the option Type the printer name... If you know the full name of the printer, you can type this in directly. For example, \\GG-PC22\Staff Colour A4 might be a shared printer called Staff Colour A4 attached to a Windows system in Geography called GG-PC22. If you do not know the name of the printer, leave the Name field empty and press the Next button. Follow the instructions on Browsing to Locate a Shared Printer. Printer Published in the Active Directory The Find Printers window will be displayed. To search the entire Active Directory for printers, just click on the Find Now button. If you prefer, you can use the Feature and Advanced tabs to limit your search to printers with certain attributes. A llist of printers in the CFS Active Directory which match your criteria will be displayed in the lower pane of the window. If the printer you require is listed, select it and click on the OK button. Proceed to Section 4 to complete the printer connection. If you can't find the printer in the Active Directory, click on the close box in the top right corner of the Find Printers window title bar. In the Locate Your Printer dialog box, you can now choose to type the printer name or browse for it on the network, as described at the end Section 2. 1Look in your workspace or nearby vicinity for a shared network printer. The best way to reduce a long walk to a printer is to locate the closest one to you. Jot down the serial number and make of the wireless printer.

Step 2Open up your "Start" tab and go to "My Computer." Your settings should be located under this file, but if they aren't, peruse your PC settings until you locate the printing/faxing folder or icon.

Step 3Double-click on your Printer settings and look for a "Locate wireless printer" or "Add printer" icon. If you already have a wireless printer set up, but you want one that is closer to your desk, click on "Add printer."

Step 4You will be prompted with a "Searching for network printers" message and the process could take a few minutes. Give the search some time and wait for it to complete.

Step 5If you notice that the printer you want isn't listed, type it in manually or double-click on the name of the printer you want. When given the option to connect to it, do so.

Step 6If you find that you still cannot print a test page from the particular network printer you want, you may have to connect to the shared printer manually each time. If another computer in your workspace is connected to that particular printer, have the computer user set up a shared printer status on the network printer. Add a user ID and password in the shared printer allowances to allow your PC to access the printer.

Step 7Go into your network folder and look for the list of available PC's on the network. In order to "trick" the network, you will have to sign into the shared printer network with the user ID password your coworker allotted for in the shared printer folder.

Step 8Double-click on your coworkers' network name and you will be prompted to enter your user ID and password. After doing so, you essentially are on their shared printer network and should be able to print from your desired network printer at this time.
