Im sorry that so many people have no idea what MUDs are. Do not be concerned about using telnet with muds. Their worries are old worries and apply to logging into a shell account. MUD games have been around for decades and have proven those concerns to be non-existent. (but just on the safe side, be sure to use a password on your character which is not the same as other passwords you use)

Microsoft removed telnet from Vista altho you can go to the microsoft.com site and download it. However as soon as you connect to a mud and mention that you are using telnet you will quickly get many suggestions of better client programs. Even though its a telnet connection, very few people use telnet to play. Client programs support things like mapping, and running macros which can speed up re-occurring actions.

On my muds I find that ZMUD is the most popular amouing the players. Here is a list of many downloadable client programs for muds.

But if you want a telnet replacement to use for other telnet purposes also then you might want to pick up NetTerm or PuTTY to use as a more general client replacement for telnet.exe

Telnet is an old text based protocol. It still exists, and you access it from the DOS command line. I would be very careful using it, since about the only people that have any use for it these days are using it as a way to break into machines.

Do some more checking first

I'm not that familiar with telnet but to open the telnet service go to start>run>type in cmd>type in telnet

Also, telnet is very insecure and more isp's have blocked the protocol making it only useful on local networks. Make sure you trust who you're connecting to.

I would be very suspicious of an rpg game you play via telnet as I don't think it's possible. Telnet is used for transferring files between computers. Watch yourself. ;)

You need to get to the dos prompt in Vista. Do a help search for dos or command prompt. Once you get there you will get a black screen that comes up and it will show something like c:\ once you are there you type in telnet ip_address and that will connect you to the other server and you can then enter a username and password and then issue commands against the server.
