Question:
Does securing your wireless connection make the wireless connection slower than unsecured?

before i secured my wireless connection, everything was running smooth, and at a good rate of speed. But after i reinstalled my version of xp, and the installation of my wireless network, i secured my wireless connection and things are taking a while to load. Is it a computer problem or is it practically the wireless connection that is secured that is the problem... Some say that the more people use your wireless connection, the faster it'll send and recieve the packets... tHAnkx You "=-=}

The short answer that you're probably looking for is no.

The technical answer is yes. Applying encryption to anything will always make it slower than if it were unencrypted. I say no above because the difference in speed between encrypted and unencrypted is negligible at normal Internet speeds. If you were asking about applying encryption on a gigabit ethernet LAN, then there would be a very noticeable difference in speed. However, since your Internet connection is probably 15-20 mbps at the max, then it will be slightly slower, but you won't be able to tell the difference.

Securing your wireless network will not result in a reduction in your internet connect slower. Could be a number of other issues, but it is hard to say without more information.

No way, it does not have any effect on the speed. Try if your computer is running any unwanted processes in the background.

Also it may be a case that either Windows or your Antivirus software or any other software might be downloading updates during the time you were trying to browse.

Please observe it.

All the best!

Securing your wireless connection definitely can slow it down. I've experienced this firsthand. Try switching your algorithm. For example, if you're using AES right now, try TKIP and see if that helps.

no. if anything it makes it faster by kicking piggybackers off.
