I am making a server. Should i use a laptop running xp or a desktop running 2000?

I am trying to set up a server to host an online game. I have a windows 2000 ME(lol) with about 5000 kb of ram (desktop pc). I also have a laptop running xp and it has 512 mb of ram. I was wondering if i should use my old laptop as a server or use the old desktop. Ill take any and all advice on this. I also heard there is a way to boost xp ram with a gigstick? Maybe I should utilize this somehow.

both options suck. 5000kb is 5MB. a machine with ME and 5MB of ram isn't going to run anything well, if at all. I suspect you're just wrong about the amount of ram, but whatever, its a POS.



laptops aren't meant to run 24/7. they will overheat and wear out quickly. if you mean this to be a proper server and online all the time, don't use a laptop.

Your best bet is to take the machine with the most RAM slots and put one of the various versions of Linux on it. Ubuntu is popular and is free. Ram is cheap these days. Google your machine and see how many slots it has and how much Ram will mount in each.
